THE 2010 Olympic games at Vancouver, the host city of Olympic and Paralympic Winter games, came around as a bitter sweet symphony for all as it witnessed a tacit start.

However, the opening party that came close on the heels was nothing short of a soiree. The event witnessed hundreds of dancers dressed in their native costumes. The celebrities who graced the occasion were Canadian Singers, Sarah McLachlan and K D Lang. The nation that received special cheers was Canada, which was celebrating the beginning of its first Winter Games in 22 years.

Republic of Georgia has been in mourning, after the death of one of its athletes here on Friday. 21 year old Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, crashed during a training run on Friday. The group representing Georgia carried a flag with a black banner in honor of Nodar Kumaritashvili. Some of the coaches and teammates were teary-eyed while parading into stadium. As the crowd paraded into the stadium the crowd rose to give the nation a well-deserved ovation. Amidst the rumours that Georgians are not participating, the organizers and spectators were relieved to see the team participating.

Towards the end of the event, the Olympic torch was to be lit by four great Canadian sportsmen; hockey player Wayne Gretzky, skier Nancy Greene, speedskater Catriona LeMay Doan and basketball All Star Steve Nash. The lighting did see a snag but the emotional audience did not take notice of and they rose to applaud when the torch was lit. The torchbearers included the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

An event that would house around 2500 athletes from 82 nations did not see a rosy start, amidst protests the relay took a different route to avoid protests.

Late that Friday, in a joint statement issued by the Olympic organizing committee and the sport’s international governing body said that the crash that caused death of the luge athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili was because of his own errors on the course and not because of any deficiency in the Whistler Sliding Centre course.
